C. Custer posted an article named 《Racism in China》. It seems that I have made a big trouble in my article 《Evolution》. Mr.Custer said:
So is it ignorance or indifference that caused most people (including the bloggers themselves) to ignore the racism and post the image?
Let me tell you why:
1、None of my race ever caught and shiped any single black man from Africa to China as slave. So I can make fun of them, just as they can make fun of me. So, What the damn "Racism" is?
2、There is no any single black man in China has been treated differently. They can take any bus as they want, enter any college as they wish, date any girl as they like. So, What the damn "Racism" is?
3、I am sick of "Political correctness". It is because what you American have done makes the word "Negro" a taboo. You guys can not make any joke on skin color only because some of you named "KKK" had special predilection in skin color when they tried to make their human-flesh-barbecue. You guys do need the "Political correctness" . It is a made-in-USA taboo, a made-in -USA G-point, but count me out, please. So, What the damn "Racism" is?
4、On the very day I first knew there is Black Men exist in this world, I thought that they do look like the ape. It is neither Black men's nor my fault, DNA made it. I can't help laughing when I think of the ape, which calls "solecism", not "Racism" . So, What the damn "Racism" is?
5、Even when your charming Obama is using money-making machine to resolve economic crisis, I only blame him as a waterful-mouthed political vase. I don't say "go back to Kenya jungle, take banana as much as you can". See? I know What the "Racism" is.
By the way, is there any "Racism" for white man? Maybe A ape with albinism?

I don't say "go back to Kenya jungle, take banana as much as you can". See? I know What the "Racism" is.

none?

您说“There is no any single black man in China has been treated differently.”

An Old Joke
Dear white, something you got to know.
When I was born, I was black.
When I grow up, I am black.
When I'm under the sun, I'm black.
When I'm cold, I'm black.
When I'm afraid, I'm black.
When I'm sick, I'm black.
When I die, I'm still black.
You--white people, 你--白种人,
When you were born, you were pink.
When you grow up, you become white.
You're red under the sun.
You're blue when you're cold.
You are yellow when you're afraid.
You're green when you're sick.
You're gray when you die.
And you, call me"color"?

呵呵,if he is not of our race,he is sure to have a different mind,经鉴定,这句话完全可以贴上种族主义标签。

There was a law in Alabama which banned interracial marriages. Maybe it had not been enforced for some time, but the law was not abolished until a few years ago.
Last year, a guy shot at a couple in front of a local store in my town because he was infuriated that a white girl was holding hands with his black BF.
Some little friends here have no idea what 种族主义 is.
The problem was not about PC or 礼貌. The real issue was that some people wanted to impose their PC onto other people.

If you think the images posted on hecaitou’s blog - Evolution, were out of racism, then what would you think when you look at the image at the bottom of hecaitou’s blog - “Racism?”, which was originally from New York Post?!
All I can say is that you are lack of sense of humor!
PS: I have seen those images long time ago. According to what I remember, they were not created by Chinese, and your guess was right: the last one about China was added on later.

Question 1: What makes the Africans so sensitive about their skin color though they should have been proud of that?
Chinese didn’t mean to insult the Africans by this picture, as you could see a crab is put to representing themselves in the same image.
Yeah, you could say though they didn’t mean to, or even didn’t realize how ridiculous it is by doing so, it still would hurt the feelings of the Africans. So it comes to Question 2:
Why should the Africans feel insulted by a picture like that, when everyone can see it simply a joke?
Why doesn’t the Japanese, the Korean, the Europeans or the Americans feel insulted by the same image? Why didn’t you think they should feel that way?
What makes you think just the Africans would be totally offended by it?
If it is the case as you described, one possible reason could be the Africans are made lack of confidence and even couldn’t afford a joke. The question is, by who? Of course not God, but some people and nations that regard themselves as God, and believe they could spread their opinions as social values throughout the world.
You label this particular case as racism but I couldn’t see you are more civilized than the Chinese you criticized. You obviously are well educated though, yet the Chinese do not own them debts. We no need to make up this lesson. At least in this particular picture, we treat them just as equally as any others, including ourselves.
As to the prejudice towards the Africans in China, which is actually a different topic, but comparatively, the treatments they receive from Chinese may be better than that gained from the Americans. They even receive better treatments from the government than that for the local citizens. I do not understand why noticing this disappoints you so. As you could see from the picture, we are on our way building a more “harmony society”, wearing three Rolexes. Now you are offering to donate more, but could you please manage to get the other 5 please. Maybe both Hu and Obama would sign an award for your contribution. While the Africans would be so thankful that they nominate and elect you as the chief of the continent.
So why why, why should it be regarded as and related with racism? Use your fingers to count how many people have been worshiping King Kong. Africans, as any others, deserve the respect but not the protection from some people who think they are superior and could exert absolute influence on anyone. They are independent. They have self-esteem. They have the sense of humor. They are not so narrow-minded. They are not so easy to fool. They have their opinion, but not all American rubbish. The discussion may be more productive between the Chinese and the Africans, if it is an issue to them.
So I have to say, good efforts sir, but you think too much. The Americans, if I could venture to say, in lots of cases, they are far too good at nothing but stirring up shit. BTW, here it’s just a picture, but unfortunately from your points of view, it’s shit. SHIT!!
Go find a pair of new glasses please. Since you know China so well, you know where to find cheap and good stuff—do not tell me you are so principled and never try any of them. If you do not know, check with any Chinese you bump into in the street, and I bet he/she would love to tell you, even though there does have prejudice or racism in this perfect world, especially China.

Racism, by definition on Merriam-Webster, is the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. People with racist beliefs exhibit stereotype-based prejudices towards individuals and groups of people according to their race.

As an African who have been living in China for long time (7 years), I want to thank you for this discussion, please stop insulting each other. If you think Custer is wrong by saying the image you posted on the site has a racism connotation, so explain it.
I m not blaming you to have done so but I can tell you that while you think the image is funny, it is 100% offending to Africans. So don't send it to an African expecting him to laugh.
I understand you didn t have the intention to offend Africans (and u didn t offend them).
However it's a good idea talking about such sensitive issues like racism.

==========================================@和菜头

=========================================

Whether it is the American white man's shame for what he did to the African blacks (with lots of help from African blacks, Arabs, and Europeans, by the way), or Chinese fathers selling their own daughters into prostitution for a handful of money, the fact is that slavery is a part of the background of ALL humans. Let's learn from it and try to end ALL forms of slavery.

@和菜头
I think you're missing the point of C. Custer's post. He's not saying Chinese people are racist. He's posing the question "To what extent is this a manifestation of racism?" His point as that racist or not, China needs to be more sensitive to what might be offensive to Africans.
You say that:
1、None of my race ever caught and shiped any single black man from Africa to China as slave. So I can make fun of them, just as they can make fun of me. So, What the damn "Racism" is?
--------------------------------------
This logic is a little scrupulous, since most black slaves were caught by other blacks (usually from different tribes) and sold to white traders. So then, by your argument, blacks should not be able to make fun of blacks either, but it is ok for Chinese to do so, since they were not involved in the slave trade.
You say that:
2、There is no any single black man in China has been treated differently. They can take any bus as they want, enter any college as they wish, date any girl as they like. So, What the damn "Racism" is?
--------------------------------
Have you ever met an African who was dating a Chinese girl? Ever talked to the parents and asked what they felt about their daughter marrying/dating a black guy? It's not so simple.
adendum: (This was not in the original Chinese post)
Personally, I believe there is racism everywhere, in every country, with every nationality. It's an inevitability of humanity, and comes in various forms (race, sex, religion, social class, etc.) Usually the worst instances of racism are among individuals/groups who maintain that it does not exist. The key to curbing racism is first to accept that it exists, and secondly expose oneself to others of different races, sexes, religions, social classes, etc. and the sensitivities that they might have.
Personally, I do not believe that the original cartoon is necessarily indicative of racism. In fact, I am very much in agreement with the author of this post that PCness has gotten completely out of hand in the United States. However, I do know that to many people, this cartoon would be extremely offensive, and a harsh reminder of a racist past. Therefore, I would not knowingly pass it on to others. This is the crux of C. Custer's argument. He's not saying Chinese are necessarily racist. Rather, he is saying that maybe Chinese people should be more sensitive to issues which might not be sensitive to them but might be sensitive to others. You could say the same thing for Westerners towards Chinese people as well.

@Ben Ross:
China needs not to be more sensitive to what might be offensive to Africans. ”

I think the idea that foreigners should be treated at certain standards is in fact the components of racism
It is your character that you show hospitality to others
It is also your freedom that you like to invite frds and frds of your frds to come over your place to have a party
But it doesn't necessarily mean I have to act like you do.
I dunno but if you expect to be treated in every sense the same as in your own country why bother to come to a "foreign" country?
Being treated differently can be interpreted as being discriminated but it takes a long long way to reach racism

Sorry but you are wrong. Chinese also had african slaves.
"Beginning in the Tang dynasty, Arab traders brought a number of East African slaves to China. Although historians have studied the African slave trade extensively, particularly the export of West African slaves to the Americas after 1500, a much smaller body of research focuses on the premodern East African slave trade, and fewer sources still mention black slaves in China.
From the eighth to the fourteenth centuries; the Arabs controlled this vast slave trade, which stretched not only along the entire coast of East Africa and throughout the Arab world but as far east as China. Black slaves were just one of many commodities in the Arabs' large-scale maritime trade with China, which peaked during the Tang and Song dynasty (960-1275).
The Jiu Tang shu 舊唐書 (Former Tang history) mentions that the Arabs sent delegates to the Chinese court in 651, marking the first recorded official contact between the Chinese government and the Arab caliphate. By the ninth century, a sizable community of Arabs lived in Guangzhou, and the local residents could have seen African slaves on trading ships and in Arab homes. Some wealthy Chinese people even owned African slaves, whom they used as doorkeepers."

I feel deeply offended by this image despite the fact that I do recognise its comic intent. However, I must say that I am not so impressed by how literally some people look at this. The fact that the rest of the world thinks they are better than us has not eluded me, that they have nothing better to do with us than take what we have burns me.
Says:
"Question 1: What makes the Africans so sensitive about their skin color though they should have been proud of that?
Chinese didn’t mean to insult the Africans by this picture, as you could see a crab is put to representing themselves in the same image."
He/she asks several well directed yet misguided questions. First of all 沙鸥 what do you know of Africa, for one think it is vast with people varying in so many ways your semi-cooked mind would fry. One thing I know about us is that wherever we are, we want to make a living, want to be happy, want to love and enjoy life. you say we can't take a joke? For how long have we been jokes to this world, how long have we taken it all lying down? I do not appreciate being called an ape even though you think it's funny.
I am african we are farmers, miners, healers and worriers, we have cultures. So much of what were supposed to be has been taken from us and now I have to be made fun of by some pencildicked asian? Do you think it is fair that I attack your race about your race just because I think it is funny? I am black and I love it. I will sleep with your women just to prove it, change my name to "fuckwell" and they will never let you forget that.
I believe that african evolution was disturbed,we had our own destiny with time. but somone thought it a good idea to ship us all over the world. Now they turn around and cry foul when we dominate. And believe me, it is only a matter of time, probably not in yours or my lifetime. We will take over the world.

I was reading your discussion and I want to contribute a little bit. I am an African who lives in China for many years. I cannot say that chinese are racist or not because I have got many chinese friends. At the same time some chinese will even not dare to talk to me. I can understand. Racism as you have been discussing about must be put into context. Racism rely in a simple but deep reflex:" You are not me, You are different from me, I don't like You because I don't know You". when we speak of racism we are not speaking or natural or physical boundaries or differences, we are speaking of psychological barriers. So, in any culture we will have discrimination because many people will not accept "You". Our aim is to break the barriers. Instead of discussing we should come together try to know each other and I am sure that we can win. For that, many pages of history have to be rewritten to give credit to whom it is due in the building of human civilization wether in Africa, Europe America, or Asia. I am confident because we have the strength and all the tools to make it happen. So, this image that I saw is not helpful in this context.

I was reading your discussion and I want to contribute a little bit. I am an African who lives in China for many years. I cannot say that chinese are racist or not because I have got many chinese friends. At the same time some chinese will even not dare to talk to me. I can understand.
N'dji comment strikes a balanced tone, and I agree it's important not to get too worked up on these sorta issues, but I think it comes down to the fact that, to quote N'dji, "At the same time some chinese will even not dare to talk to me": as a white foreigner, even in deep in rural China, I do not experience this - people are generally very talkative and approachable. I have never found anybody scared of me. I have been insulted (some might say racially abused) when I've been with my Chinese girlfriend, but it was by a drunk youth...
Information is strictly controlled in China, and culturally it has always been an inward-looking country, and its so large that many of the population have little contact with external influences. There seems to be a tendency to understand things using stereotypes and cultural inferences - of course this is true of nearly everybody wherever they're from to a degree, but China conforms to this idea more strongly than most places I've been.
Dark skin is looked down upon in Chinese culture in general, so the prejudice could stem from the general idea that dark skin = working outdoors = peasant = unsuccessful/dirty. Ironically, having tanned skin is fashionable in western societies in which its seen as a sign of affluence and evidence of being well-off enough to holiday and spend leisure time outdoors/in different environments...
China is not a very cosmopolitan society, and clearly has a lot of ethnic issues; but when any criticism such as this is raised, the often hostile, defensive and nationalistic reactions of Chinese frequently prevent any meaningful debate.
